The Uyak Story

The name Uyak (pronounced "ooyak") was taken from a native village on Kodiak Island, Alaska.

Our kennel began with a family pet, Ch. Sena-Lak's Simka, who was owner handled to his championship. In the process, we learned that the ideal malamute that was in our mind's eye did not exist and could only be developed after considerable research and study of the breed.

In the early years, our son Jon trained and worked our dogs pulling sleds. Our daughter Paula, was an outstandingly successful junior handler and professional groomer. Our kennel has been a wonderful family interest and activity.

We made a fresh start in the late 1960's in acquiring our foundation bitch, Ch. Karahonta Conestoga, from California bred Kodara stock owned by Cassandra Becker. This particular Kodara stock was used to firmly establish proper Malamute type, conformation and movement. Connie finished her championship owner handled taking both the New York-New Jersey area specialty (under Eva B. Seeley) and the Mideast area specialty show (under Melbourne T. Downing).

To establish the Uyak bloodline, we used repeated breedings crossing select Kodara stock with select T'Domar stock from Tom and Doris Baxter's T'Domar Kennels near Oneonta, New York. We selected T'Domar stock to improve bone, feet, coats and pigment. These dogs were heavily rooted in the HuskyPak line from Bob Zoller. Since we had become a professional handler, showing Ch. T'Domar's Bismarck to Winners Dog at the 1968 National Specialty Show and to Best of Winners at Westminster that winter, we were familiar with the best qualities of these dogs. The Uyak bloodline was not established by a single breeding (Ch. T'Domar's Kulak x Ch. Karohonta Conestoga), but rather involved many similar and parallel pairings.

Our foundation dogs themselves represented a highly select and concentrated gene pool which had been achieved by very close breeding. We collaborated with Cassandra Becker, Bob Montheard and Steve Nash in this process. In later years, we worked with George and Tina Meyers, Terry Sewell, Ken Hyatt and Brian Quinn in developing the bloodline. More recently, we have collaborated with Rich Harrison, Pete Reynolds and Dan Chamberlain in arranging key breedings. We continue to be receptive to collaborating with an additional dedicated few who want to participate in furthering this outstandingly prepotent and unique bloodline.

The hallmark of Uyak breeding is close linebreeding and occasional inbreeding. This consistent, well planned breeding program is the reason Uyak dogs are instantly recognizable by Malamute lovers everywhere and carry the prepotency needed to improve most any other line. On an overall percentage basis, Ch. Uyak Buffalo Bill, R.O.M. (his headshot is in our logo) is probably one of the most outstanding producers in the history of the breed. Two of our studs have produced Best in Show winners.

Over the years, the outstanding quality of our dogs has been recognized by our peers and we are proud that other Malamute breeders and AKC licensed Malamute judges have bought our dogs. Because we own frozen semen on key prepotent and proven studs of our line, we continue to enjoy the capacity to produce Uyak dogs of undiminished exemplary type and quality.
