The Late Harold B. Schwartzapfel, Ph.D. 1931-2019
Master Breeder Emeritus
In addition to his reknowned credentials as a dog breeder, professionally, Harold was a retired public school Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction from Flushing, New York (Board of Education, City of New York), as well as Adjunct Professor, Graduate School of Education, St. John's University, Jamaica, New York. Harold was also an American History scholar, teacher and accomplished educational consultant.
Harold was a Lifetime Member of the AMCA, a former AKC Professional Handler, an official AMCA Judges Mentor as well as active participant as Breeder Emeritus, Uyak. Harold’s key interest in the dog world was the art and science of linebreeding his Uyak breeding program. Harold played a current and direct role in all Uyak bloodline breedings as well as evaluation amd screening of stock. Throughout his decades as one of the developers of the breed, Harold did, on occasion, mentor promising new breeders and novices. He also participated in special events including judging. Harold was a supporter of the funding of research efforts associated with improving the current health status of the breed. Harold had been married to Lois for almost 66 years and together, they are the devoted parents of Paula and Dr. Jon and are actively involved with both of their two grandchildren, Corey Henkin; a Graduate in Environmental Studies at University at Buffalo and Noah Schwartzapfel; who is an exceptional middle school student and animal lover.
